Kano Dep Governor’s seat: Concerned Elders make case for Ex-Speaker Kabiru Rurum

0

Kano South Concerned Elders Forum has appealed to Governor Abba Kabiru Yusuf to appoint Hon Kabiru Alhassan Rurum as the next Deputy Governor of the state.

According to them, his appointment would support the administration and correct the years of political lopsidedness in the leadership of the state.

Their appealed was sequel to the nomination of Rurum, alongside Engineer Rabiu Sulieman Bichi and Murtala Sule Garo  by the legacy group of the state’s All Progressives Congress (APC) for the governors final selection for the vacant post.

In a statement signed on Wednesday by the Chairman of the Elders, Senator Masaud El- Jibril Doguwa, they affirmed that the nomination of Rirum , a former Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly and a current member of the Nigeria’s House Representatives, represented a turning point in the political history of Kano -South.

“For the first time in over 30 years, someone from the zone has come close to being nominated as the state Deputy Governor. All past efforts by other capable politicians from the zone to secure the post of the state governor has failed to materialize” they recalled.

The elders, which included Musa Salihu, Alhassan Kibya, Rabiu Bala,  Yau Beza , Wai Ado and several others , lamented that the zone, which has 16 LGAs and is one of the largest Senatorial zones in Nigeria, has yearned for decades for an equitable representation at the highest levels of leadership in the state.

While appreciating the Governor for his strength of character, fairness, justice and sense of inclusiveness, they stressed that the choice of Rirum for the position would go a long way to strengthen the administration.

“He is a grass root politician, a team worker,  and approachable with extensive network all over the state and beyond.. He shares the same values with the Governor on the delivery of democratic dividends to his constituency” they declared.

Katsina community threatens to boycott 2027 elections over deplorable road

0

Communities living along Funtua- Malumfashi-Kankara- Dutsinma–Katsina roads have expressed serious concerns over the deplorable condition of the roads.

A resident of the area Ismail Kankara told The Punch on Sunday in Yargoje village that the roads have become death traps for both motorists and commuters plying the roads.

“These roads, Malumfashi-Funtua and Malumfashi-Kankara-Dutsinma- Katsina are the worst roads in the entire Katsina State.

“The deplorable condition of these roads especially Malumfashi-Funtua and Malumfashi-Kankara has forced many commercial vehicle drivers to stop plying the roads.

“Most motorists going to Kano from Funtua prefer to go to Zaria in Kaduna State and follow the dual carriageway because it’s safer for them,” Kankara said.

He noted that the inability of the authorities concerned to rehabilitate the roads has worsened the current insecurity challenges bedeviling the area as hardly a day passes without a report on bandits attacking residents of the area.

“Hardly a day passes without bandits attacking villages in the area because the roads are not motorable,” he said.

He blamed the Federal Lawmakers representing the state at the National Assembly as well as the State Government for not making any move to see to the rehabilitation of the roads.

“The Senator representing Katsina South, Muntari Dandutse is from Funtua but he is not doing anything to ensure the rehabilitation of the road,” he said.

“Look at Malumfashi-Kankara road even the state government can rehabilitate the dilapidated portion of the road, but the road is not their concern for now,” he said.

Another resident of the area, Musa Abubakar also blamed the Federal Lawmakers and the state government for not prevailing on the Federal Government to rehabilitate the roads.

“With the money state governments are getting from the Federal allocation, the Katsina State government can rehabilitate the roads and request for reimbursement as it used to be the case in the past,” he said.

According to him, the people of the areas have threatened to boycott the 2027 general elections if the government failed to come to their rescue.

“People in this area are not happy with politicians in the state, they are even threatening to boycott the forthcoming general elections if nothing is done about this road,” he added.

Another resident of the area, Aminu Abdullahi lamented that most of the potholes that had earlier been patched along the road, had already gone off thereby causing vehicles breakdown and accidents.

Abdullahi said, “As I am talking to you now the patched potholes carried out by the previous administration had gone off, making it difficult for motorists plying the road to move easily.”

Our correspondent who was in Kankara Local Government area of Katsina State on Sunday, observed that motorists plying the road have to drive “at a snail speed” due to the deteriorating condition of the road to avoid possible breakdown of their vehicles.

Efforts to contact the Federal Controller of Works, Katsina State, Engr. Idris Matinja failed as an official who was supposed to provide his contact deliberately refused to do so.

Zulum provides quarry centre, 70 trucks to spur infrastructure dev’t

Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has announced the establishment of a quarry centre in Pulka, Gwoza Local Government Area, to accelerate infrastructure development in the state.

Zulum made this announcement on Monday while flagging off the distribution of 70 brand-new Howo pickup trucks to the Ministry of Works and the State Road Maintenance Agency (BORMA) at the Government House.

The 70 Howo trucks are designed to boost the operational capacity of the Ministry of Works and its supervising agencies. The trucks will enable the swift delivery of materials to sites and faster intervention on distressed roads.

According to the governor, the quarry centre will provide locally sourced materials including granite, gravel and sharp sand to support ongoing and future road projects, reducing dependence on external suppliers and cutting costs.

“We have achieved a lot in health, education, agriculture, security, and road construction among others. However, we still have challenges of constructing roads within the state, especially in rural communities,” Zulum said.

“My administration has established a quarry plant in Pulka with a processing capacity of 120 tons per hour. The State Government spent at least 3 billion to establish the quarry plant”, he added.

According to the governor, due to the prevailing insecurity, most contractors are not willing to work in Borno.

“You know, no serious contractor will take the risk of deploying his equipment to most of the implementing areas, so this is the reason we are here”, the governor reinstated.

“So, we have no option but to strengthen the capacity of the Ministry of Works, the capacity of Borno State Road Maintenance Agency (BORMA), the capacity of  special projects, monitoring departments and other MDAs that are responsible for road construction.”

The brief ceremony was attended by the Secretary to Borno State Government, Bukar Tijani, Acting Chief of Staff, Dr Babagana Mustapha Mallumbe, Permanent Secretary Ministry of Works, Engr Baware, BORMA Chairman, Engr Sadu Auno, the Special Adviser on Monitoring and Evaluation, Engr Bukar Gujubawu and other senior officials.

Maryam Abacha urges Northern stakeholders to adopt constructive engagement with FG

0

Former First Lady, Hajia Maryam Sani Abacha, has called on political leaders, traditional institutions, religious scholars, women and youth organisations across Northern Nigeria to adopt a coordinated and constructive approach in engaging the Federal Government on the region’s multifaceted challenges, with a view to achieving durable and sustainable solutions.

She also cautioned against the use of abusive language and derogatory remarks in public discourse, noting that such conduct is inimical to constructive engagement, undermines governance processes, and does not contribute to meaningful progress.

According to her, “the use of invective against leaders does not serve the interests of the ordinary citizen; rather, it weakens governance structures. What is required is constructive engagement, accompanied by prayers and a sincere articulation of the people’s challenges in a manner that promotes unity and collective advancement.”

Mrs Abacha made the call in a statement she personally signed and issued to newsmen from Paris, on Friday, April 10, 2026.

Maryam Abacha further noted that, drawing on her experience as a former First Lady familiar with the workings of government and established channels for transmitting public concerns, there is a need for Northern stakeholders to recalibrate their approach to advocacy and grievance articulation.

“Rather than resorting to media platforms for the exchange of insults, I call on Northern traditional rulers to close ranks and engage the Federal Government through appropriate institutional mechanisms on the pressing challenges confronting the region—particularly insecurity, poverty, and the socio-economic hardship affecting the populace.”

She emphasised the importance of inclusive participation, stating that all segments of society must be actively involved in structured advocacy and representation.

She further called on women’s groups, business leaders, the organised private sector, youth organisations, religious scholars, academics, and security personnel of Northern origin, alongside other stakeholders, to forge a unified platform for dialogue with the Federal Government aimed at addressing the region’s developmental and security concerns.

“I have had the privilege of being within the seat of the Federal Government; I understand how sustained and coordinated public pressure through legitimate channels can prompt decisive action.

“I therefore appeal to Northerners–particularly religious leaders, traditional rulers, business leaders, women’s groups, youth organisations, university academics, and all stakeholders—to speak with one voice, including security personnel of Northern origin, especially on the issue of insecurity and the underlying factors driving underdevelopment in the region.

“After presenting grievances, prayers should follow. Let there be supplication, patriotism, and then structured engagement with government. When such concerns are harmonised across all sectors, the government will be compelled to respond constructively in the interest of peace and stability,” Hajia Maryam said.

She also extended goodwill to public office holders at all levels, from the Federal Government to state governors, legislators, local government chairmen, and councillors, urging them to discharge their responsibilities with justice, equity, and a strong sense of national responsibility.

The former First Lady further expressed concern over what she described as the relative cohesion among stakeholders in Southern Nigeria in advancing their collective interests through coordinated representation, stressing the need for Northerners to cultivate similar unity of purpose and strategic engagement.

She also urged the Federal Government to intensify its focus on youth welfare, particularly by tackling unemployment and insecurity, in order to enhance socio-economic conditions and strengthen national stability.

Hajia Maryam further noted that her appeal was made in her capacity as a mother to all Nigerians, with the objective of fostering balance, equity, and social cohesion across the country.

“I made this appeal as a mother to all Nigerians, in the interest of fairness and national harmony. Those who may be uncomfortable with my remarks should recognise that it reflects the truth and exercise patience—truth, by its very nature, can be difficult to accept,” she said.

The first lady also offered prayers for Nigeria, seeking enduring peace, stability, and unity for the nation.
