How removal of Sheikh Ibrahim Khalil tears Kano Council of Ulama apart

Date:

The recent removal of Sheikh Ibrahim Khalil from his position as chairman of the Kano state chapter of Council of Ulama (Islamic Clerics) has tore the council apart, Daily Telescope, observed.

Recalled that a section of Islamic scholar under the banner of the council, on Monday announced the impeachment of Sheikh Khaleel as leader of the Council in the state.

Consequenrly, another section of the Scholars, who are present during the announcement expressed dissatisfaction over the process.

Addressing newsmen in Kano on Monday, a coalition of the various Muslim sects in Kano that include Izala, Tijjaniyya and Kadiriyya, lead by Ustaz Saifullah Assudani said that the chairman of the State Council of Ulama was impeached for being political in running the affairs of the council.

The coalition also announced the appointment of Professor Abdullahi Saleh Pakistan, who is also the chairman of Kano Pilgrims Welfare Board as the new chairman of the council.

Some of the reasons they gave for impeaching the leader include, “turning the council into a political platform by engaging in face-off with every government that comes into power that include former governors Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, Rabiu Kwankwaso and of recent, Dr Abdullahi Ganduje.

His reasons in all the cases were that they disallowed him to contest political offices in his position as a cleric, a situation that has led to the council not benefiting from the government and the government loosing the elderly advises of the council.

“Lack of fairness to all the religious groups in the state who do not have any stake in the council, that include Tijjaniyya, Qadiriyya, Izala and other clerics from religious sects not mentioned here.

“Members are complaining of being kept aside without knowledgeable of what is happening in the council” the Ulama said.

However, an Islamic cleric from the Tijjaniyya sect in Kiru Local Government, Sheikh Sulaiman Bello Kiru, described the purported inpeachment as political.

He said: “The purported impeachment is unfair and is politically motivated. We are not part of this decision and it looks more political.

“We were only invited to attend the press conference, only  to hear the announcement that Sheikh Khalil has been impeached. This is unfair and uncalled for.

“We were not consulted and are not aware of anything. The body has no constitution, no tenure for the leadership and is being politicised” he stated.

However, the Coalition of Ulama and Islamic organizations’ in Kano State, a group presumed to be siding with Sheikh Khalil, has distanced itself from the purported impeachment of Sheikh Khalil.

In a statement made issued to newsmen on Tuesday, the Council’s Secretary, Dr Sa’idu Ahmad Dukawa, opined that the coalition was not involved in the decision that led to the purported ouster of Sheikh Ibrahim Khalil, hence it is not in support of the action.

The statement further said that the council has always sought to ensure peace and unity among the faithful of the Islamic religion, warning that such decisions are liable to truncating such good intentions.

Recall that some Muslim sects including Izala, Tijjaniyya and Kadiriyya, purportedly impeached Sheikh Ibrahim Khalil on Monday for allegedly politicizing religious affairs and criticizing Governor Ganduje’s administration over his alleged ambition to join governorship race.

The statement further added that Islamic scholars that appended their signatures on the disclaimer include Prof. Musa Muhammad Borodo, Khalifa Kariballah Sheikh Nasiru Kabara, Sheikh Abdulwahab Abdallah, Prof. Mohammad Babangida Mohammad, Dr. Bashir Aliyu Umar, Imam Nasiru Mohammad Adam and Dr. Bashir Mu’azzam mai Bushira.

Sheikh Khalil was impeached by what appeared to be a faction of the council led by Ustaz Saifullah Assudani, on Monday.

Dr. Dukawa charged Kano residents to continue prioritizing the peace being enjoyed in the state as well as shun anything that is likely to put a dent on such effort.(End).
