Ganduje shuns Assembly’s 48 hours ultimatum, retains revenue boss

Date:

The refusal by Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State to comply with the resolution of the House of Assembly to sack the State Internal Revenue Service (KIRS) Chairman, Alhaji Abdurrazaq Salihi may sour the relationship between the executive and legislature arms of governments.

The lawmakers last Tuesday, unanimously passed a resolution calling on the governor to remove Salihi within 48 hours due to what they considered as poor performance, breach of protocol and disrespect to Assembly.

Beside the ultimatum, the House also resolved to investigate activities of the revenue Agency with a view to finding out reasons behind the poor performance and profer solutions.

“Kano is well-known for high performance in Internally-Generated Revenue (IGR), next to Lagos State. It is worrisome that Kano is now number nine in collection and 17 in performance. This is not acceptable.

“The House has also received several petitions and complaints on the performance of the chairman. Based on this, the Assembly resolved to recommend the sack of the chairman within 48 hours,” the Speaker said.

The revenue boss was also accused of insubordination by the lawmakers after he was said to have unilaterally increased the ground rent rate without a legislative verdict.

Investigation by Daily Telescope indicated that the embattled Revenue boss resumed duty 48 hours after the assembly passed the resolution.

Even though when the resolution of the Assembly was issued Governor Ganduje had travelled out of the country, there was no indication as to whether Ganduje would succumb to lawmakers demand when he returns from the trip.
