39-year-old Luggerewo Re-elected As Gombe Assembly Speaker

Date:

The immediate past Speaker of the Gombe State House of Assembly, Abubakar Muhammad Luggerewo, was re-elected as the Speaker of the 7th Assembly in the state.

Lugerewo who is a member representing Akko Central under the All Progressives Congress (APC), emerged unopposed during the inauguration of the 7th Assembly yesterday in Gombe.

He was re-elected after a nomination by Nasiru Abdulkarim, member representing Dukku North and seconded by Zubairu Ayala Pilate, member representing Shongom Constituency.

Also, Saddam Bello Saleh of Funakaye North Constituency emerged as Deputy Speaker unopposed.

He was nominated by Mustapha Usman Hassan, representing Gombe south state constituency and seconded by Adamu Saleh Pata, a member representing Yamaltu East constituency.

The inauguration presided over by the Clerk of the House, Hajiya Rukaiyatu Adamu Jalo, said the 7th Assembly was inaugurated following issuance of Proclamation by Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, “in compliance with Section 105 (3) of the 1999 Constitution as amended.”

The clerk later swore in the speaker and the deputy speaker, while Luggerewo later sworn-in the 22 other members of the assembly.

The 24-member house has 20 members from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), while the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has four members.

Our correspondent reports that 14 members are returning lawmakers while 10 are new members.

In an acceptance speech, Lugerewo promised to justify the confidence reposed in him by the lawmakers for re-electing him “unanimously unopposed.”

He solicited the support of his colleagues and promised to ensure that the record of the 7th Assembly supersedes that of the defunct 6th Assembly.
