The Kano/Jigawa Customs Area Command has intercepted no fewer than 14 transit containers for diversion and abuse of transit procedures of Customs clearance within the past six months.
The Acting Area Controller, Usman Umar Adamu, made the disclosure while addressing newsmen on the achievements recorded by the command during the first half of the 2026 fiscal year at the Customs House, Bompai in Kano on Wednesday.
“The command intercepted 14 x 40ft transit containers involving diversion and abuse of transit procedures of Customs clearance in violation of Sections 45, 64 and 235 of the NCS Act 2023,” he said.
According to him, the Command intensified its enforcement activities through intelligence-driven operations and effective inter-agency collaboration in line with the Service’s mandate of protecting the nation’s economy and preventing the importation of controlled, prohibited and restricted goods.
These efforts, he explained resulted in 13 categories of notable detentions and seizures of smuggled vehicles and truck heads.
He said other seizures included foreign spaghetti, macaroni,
parboiled rice, Vegetable oil and counterfeit packaging material for agrochemicals and insecticides, among others.
The Area Controller said no fewer than 22 suspects were arrested in connection with the detentions and seizures.
“Some of the suspects have been handed over to the relevant security and regulatory agencies for further investigation, while others are on administrative bail,” he said.
The Acting Customs Area Controller said the total detentions and seizures recorded during the period under review amounted to a total Duty Paid Value of N1,711,235,899.2 kabo.
He urged members of the public and stakeholders to comply with government fiscal and trade measures as we move into the second half of 2026.
The Acting Customs Area Controller assured that the command would continue to build on these achievements through sustained collaboration and intelligence-driven operations.
“We remain committed to facilitating legitimate trade, protecting our nation’s economy and generating revenue for national development,” he added.
