The Universal Basic Education Commission, has called for aggressive advocacy for learners’ enrollment to address the menace of out of school children in the country.
The Director, Social Mobilisation at the Universal Basic Education Commission, Mallam Adamu Gurama made the call at
3-day capacity building programme on the revised school-based management committee document held at Tahir Guest Palace hotel, Kano on Monday.
He said the programme was aimed at equipping critical stakeholders at the state and community levels, with the requisite knowledge and practical skills needed to effectively guide schools and communities in implementing SBMC activities.
“By doing so, we aim to enhance access, equity, and quality in basic education delivery, mobilize resources, build stronger partnerships, and aggressively advocate for learners’ enrolment to address the challenge of Out-of-School Children,” he said.
According to him, the commission in collaboration with UNICEF, has revised three key operational documents to ensure strict alignment with emerging educational priorities and global best practices.
He said the three key operational documents included the SBMC Operational Manual, the Guidelines for Monitoring and Mentoring of SBMCs in Nigeria, and the SBMC School Improvement Plan Implementation Manual, noting that the revisions were undertaken to ensure strict alignment with emerging educational priorities and global best practices.
He appreciated development partner and UNICEF, for their unwavering financial and technical support in making this joint initiative a reality.
Earlier in his remarks, the Executive Chairman, Kano State Universal Education Board Alhaji Yusuf Kabir pledged the commitment of the board to sustain its support to School-Based Management Committee activities by providing office accommodation and monthly operational support for the state SBMC
The chairman who was represented by Director, Upper Basic Schools, Maikudi Al-Alawy, said the board recognized the role of SBMCs in improving the quality of basic education in the country hence the need to support their activities.
“This reflects our commitment to strengthening community participation and accountability in school management.
He commended the UBEC and UNICEF for their unwavering support towards the development of basic education in Nigeria.
“On behalf of the Kano State Universal Basic Education Board, I sincerely appreciate UBEC and UNICEF for organizing this strategic training and for selecting Kano State as the host,” he said.
According to him, the School-Based Management Committee remains one of the most effective platforms for promoting community participation, accountability, transparency, and shared ownership in the management of basic education.
“As you are all aware, the School Based Management Committee serves as a cornerstone for fostering community participation, accountability, and transparency in the management of basic education,” he added.
