Kano NDC governorship candidate picks Kwankwaso’s son as running mate

Date:

Former Kano State Deputy Governor and governorship candidate of the National Democratic Congress for the 2027 election, Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo, has unveiled Mustapha Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as his running mate.

Mustapha, a former Kano State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, is the son of former Kano State Governor and national leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

The announcement was made by the spokesperson for the Kwankwasiyya political movement, Habibu Saleh, in a brief statement shared on a WhatsApp group on Monday.

According to the statement, Gwarzo formally presented Mustapha as the party’s deputy governorship candidate ahead of the 2027 Kano State governorship election.

“The development is expected to strengthen the NDC’s political structure in Kano, as the party positions itself for the forthcoming governorship contest,” the statement said.
Mustapha previously served in the Kano State Executive Council as Commissioner for Youth and Sports, where he supervised youth development and sports-related programmes in the state.

Also in a statement on Monday by the Spokesperson to the Governorship Candidate of the NDC, Ibrahim Garba Shu’aibu, said Gwarzo presented Mustapha on Monday as his running mate before the party’s caucus and key stakeholders during a consultative meeting held at Miller Road, Kano.

“The selection of Hon. Mustapha Kwankwaso was described as a strategic and well-considered decision aimed at strengthening the party’s vision of inclusive governance, youth empowerment, economic development, and effective service delivery across Kano State,” the statement said.

According to the statement, Kwankwaso emerged as the party’s preferred choice after extensive consultations and careful consideration of several qualified individuals.

Speaking of the development, Gwarzo expressed confidence in his running mate’s capacity to contribute meaningfully to the administration’s agenda, noting that his experience, leadership qualities, and grassroots appeal make him a valuable asset to the ticket.

“Mustapha Kwankwaso, a former Commissioner for Youth and Sports in Kano State, brings with him extensive experience in public service, youth development, and community engagement.

The statement further noted that the NDC believes the Gwarzo-Kwankwaso ticket represents a strong combination of competence, experience, integrity, and commitment required to address the challenges facing Kano State and provide purposeful leadership for its citizens.

“The choice of Hon. Mustapha Kwankwaso is widely regarded as a significant boost to the party’s political structure and grassroots support base as the NDC intensifies preparations for the 2027 governorship election.

The party reaffirmed its commitment to providing a credible alternative for the people of Kano State and called on members, supporters, and stakeholders to remain united in advancing its vision of progress, transparency, accountability, and good governance.

Recall that the former deputy governor resigned from his position after Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf defected to the All Progressive Congress.
