Kano rehabilitates 320 Primary Health Centres, set to recruit 7000 health workers

The Kano State Government has rehabilitated no fewer than 320 Primary Healthcare Centres as part measures to improve healthcare delivery across the 44 local government areas of the state.

The State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, disclosed this at a press conference as part of activities marking the third anniversary of the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

“When we came in 2023 we met 1, 236 health centres in shambles, I’m happy to tell you that government has within the last three years renovated and equipped 320 PHCs, “ he said.

He noted that additional healthcare personnel had been recruited through collaboration between the state and federal governments and deployed to health facilities to improve service delivery.

According to him, the state government also plans to recruit 7,000 additional health workers including midwives and nurses to equip the state health facilities with qualified and adequate personnel to ensure quality healthcare delivery in the state.

The commissioner said the state government was also committed to strengthening secondary healthcare services across the 44 local government areas, adding that significant progress had been made in improving the availability of essential medicines in the facilities.

The commissioner said the government had revived the training and retraining of healthcare workers, restored professionalism in the sector, and secured accreditation for several health-related courses from relevant regulatory bodies.

He disclosed that opportunities had been created for medical doctors to advance to consultant status, thereby strengthening the capacity of healthcare institutions and enhancing service delivery.

He described the establishment of the Kano State Centre for Disease Control as one of the administration’s major achievements, saying the facility has significantly improved the state’s capacity to prevent, detect and respond to public health emergencies.

“The establishment of the Kano State Center for Disease Control is one of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s achievements.The centre has improved the state’s capacity to prevent, detect and respond to public health emergencies,” he said.

He said the State has intensified routine immunisation campaign to reach out to all eligible children across the 44 local government areas to check the spread of Diphtheria case.

He however urged members of the public to take every precautionary measures to prevent the spread of the disease by avoiding crowded and inventilated areas and places.

The commissioner said the state government has also intensified effort in screening of Tuberculosis disease among residents including pregnant women across the state.

“Screening of Tuberculosis among pregnant women and other people is free and is being conducted across the state,” the commissioner added.
