The Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, on Wednesday condemned the decision of the state Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, to withdraw security personnel during the celebration of Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary.
Speaking at the Sani Abacha Stadium, Kofar Mata, venue of the anniversary celebration, Yusuf described the action as “unpatriotic and uncalled for,” stressing that such conduct undermines the spirit of unity and collective responsibility that the Independence Day represents.

He said, “The withdrawal of security personnel at such a symbolic national event is unacceptable. It is unpatriotic and against the spirit of unity which our Independence Day stands for.”
The governor also reiterated his administration’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property in the state.

He said, “We will not be distracted by any action capable of disrupting public peace. Our priority remains the safety of every citizen.”
Since the inception of the NNPP-led administration in 2023, relations between the Kano State Government and the Police Command have been frosty, largely over the lingering emirate tussle.

At one point, the governor publicly accused the police of disregarding his directives, deepening the rift between both institutions.
Wednesday’s incident is
seen as another flashpoint in the uneasy ties between the state government and security authorities.
