The College of Education Academic Staff Union of the newly created Yusuf Maitama Sule Federal University of Education, Kano (formerly Federal College of Education Kano) has disowned Academic Staff of University at the institution describing it as illegal and unregistered.
The chairman of COEASU, Ado Abdullahi made this known at a press conference held at the university on Tuesday.
He said the fake union (ASU) had written to the honorable Minister of Education agitating for the removal of the council chairman by giving some invalid reasons.
“We wish to state that all the reasons they have given are invalid and we disagree with them. We are not a party to their claims and we are not aware of all their claims,” he said.
He explained further that ASU is illegitimate and is also not recognized by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) which is yet to be formed in the newly established university.

According to him, the Yusuf Maitama Sule College of Education, under which COEASU functions is still under transition after being converted to Yusuf Maitama Sule Federal University of Education, and will take some years to become a fully operating university.
He added that the COEASU will continue to exist in the university pending the graduation of all students running courses of National Certificate of Education (NCE) under the former college of education.
“We wish to inform the general public that some of our members who have given themselves the name, Academic Staff Union of this great university, have petitioned the honorable Minister of Education.
“I wish to inform you that this is an illegal union in this university and they have been warned by the council and management of the university to stop operating with an illegal union in the university.
“COEASU is the legitimate union in this university that constitutes all the legitimate staff of this university.
“We are now in a transition period and the union is also transiting to ASUU which we are yet to meet the requirements to become part of.
