Contractors handling the construction of Kano- Gwarzo-Dayi dual carriageway have for the second time now abandoned the work.
The Federal Government on Thursday, 11th June, 2021 flagged off the construction of dual carriageway from Kano to Dayi town in Katsina state awarded at the cost of N62.7 billion, but regrettably the work stopped halfway.
The Single Road Kano-Gwarzo- Dayi road which was to be reconstructed into a dual carriageway with a total length of about 100Km, was awarded by the Federal Government with the aim of easing transportation within the axis and enhancing the easy movement of farm products from rural areas to various markets across the five neighboring states.
Following the stoppage of the work by the contractor about three years ago, the affected communities had threatened to storm the National Assembly to protest the failure of the then Federal Government under the former President Muhammadu Buhari to release funds for the completion of the road.
However, on 7th February 2026, the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, announced that the Federal Government had approved ₦19 billion for the resumption of construction work on the Kano–Gwarzo–Dayi road project which was abandoned by the contractor about four years ago.
Senator Barau who disclosed this in his verified Facebook page, stated that the approval aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises the delivery of quality infrastructure with direct impact on communities across the country.
Barau explained that the approval followed his meeting with the Deputy Managing Director of CGC Nigeria Limited, Mr. LVHaiming, in Abuja, where final issues surrounding the stalled project were resolved.
However, few months after the return of the contractor to the site, the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, wrote to the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, requesting the revocation of the contract for the Kano–Gwarzo–Dayi road project due to the contractor’s poor performance.
In a leaked letter, sighted by our reporter on Thursday which was personally signed by Senator Barau, the lawmaker expressed serious concern over the performance of CGC Nigeria Limited, the contractor handling the project, which was received at the Ministry of Works headquarters on June 8, 2026, noted that despite the allocations of billions to the company.
The letter dated 4th June, 2026, reads in part, ”Given the strategic importance of the Kano-Dayi road to the socio-economic development of Kano, Katsina and Kebbi States, it is deeply concerning that the contractor has failed to make satisfactory progress despite the allocation of N19 billion and N37 billion to the project under the 2025 and 2026 Appropriation Acts, respectively.
This persistent lack of progress has resulted in undue hardship for residents, commuters, and other road users.
Senator Barau stressed that the continued delay in completing the project has negatively affected residents, commuters, and economic activities along the corridor, and called for urgent and immediate action by the Ministry of Works.
According to the letter: “Given the strategic importance of the Kano–Dayi Road to the socio-economic development of Kano, Katsina and Kebbi States, it is deeply concerning that the contractor has failed to make satisfactory progress despite the allocation of N19 billion and N37 billion to the project under the 2025 and 2026 Appropriation Acts, respectively.
“This persistent lack of progress has resulted in undue hardship for residents, commuters, and other road users.
“In view of the persistent delays and the contractor’s apparent inability to meet expected project milestones, I urge the Ministry to undertake an immediate assessment of its performance and revoke the contract in the interest of the public,” the letter added.
Despite this letter, the Minister of Works has yet to revoke the contract or take any action.
