Kano University’s ASUU rejects new governing document, urge members to ignore it

Date:

The Academic Staff Union, Kano University of Science and Technology, Wudil branch, has condemned what it described as the “illegal review of the Governing Document and the attempt to impose it on members”.

The Union, reject the document in its totality due to the failure of the University administration to comply with the laid down procedures of amending the
document as enshrined in Section 21 of the KUST Amendment Law 2017.

This is contained in a communique issued on Monday after a meeting signed by the Chairman and Secretary of the ASUU Wudil branch, Dr. Aliyu Yusuf Ahmad and Dr. Abubakar Ibrahim Tukur respectively.

The union instructed its members to abstain from recognizing or using of the documents.

They further requested the approval of the National Executive Council of the Union for active Non-Compliance until the issue among other demand of the branch are resolved by the university administration.

The communique reminded that the union has consistently demonstrated commitment to industrial harmony and academic stability in the university, noting that this position has been strengthened by the efforts of the Kano State Government in improving staff welfare and promoting the higher education sector in the state.

“However, congress observed with dismay the action of the university
administration to impose the new governing documents on members that are harmful and injurious to the development of the university,” the union said.

According to the union, the document was mischievously approved without duly engaging stakeholders and without following due process laid down by section 21 of the Kano University of Science and Technology, (KUST) Amendment Law 2017, and other local and international labour laws/conventions.

Congress further observed that the University Governing Council
that approved the new document was not properly constituted in accordance with statute 5, section 1 of the KUST Amendment Law 2017 due to the failure of the University Administration to summon a senate meeting for election of senate representative to council.

“This is in addition to other flagrant violations of the provision of the University Law such as refusal to release audited account of the University for over three years, hold regular statutory meeting such as university senate and budget monitoring committee among others too numerous to mention.”
