’20 Corps members tested positive for COVID-19 in Kano’

No fewer than 20 Corps members who are currenty undergoing orientation at the NYSC orientation camp in Kusalla in Karaye local Government area of Kano state have tested positive for the COVID-19.

A reliable source at the NYSC camp told Daily Telescope on Wednesday that the affected corps members had since been taken to one of the isolation centres in the state.

According to the source, a total of 1, 900 Corps members under the “Batch B Stream One” were deployed to Kano state for their national service.

Recall that the orientation course for the Corps members opened on Monday, 27th March 2021 throughout the country.

All effort to contact the State NYSC Coordinator, Hajia Aisha Tata and Public Relations officer failed as the two officials neither take the several phone call from our reporter or reply the text messages sent to them.

Similar effort to contact the State commissioner of Health, Dr Aminu Tsanyawa also proved abortive as he did not answer the several phone calls from our reporter.

However, when contacted, the State Coordinator on COVID-19, Dr Tijjani Husain confirmed the report.

He, however said that all those infected were not full fledged Corps members but “Prospective Corps members” as they had not been admitted into the orientation camp.

“Yes, we have some “prospective Corps members” who were found to be infected: with the disease and have since been isolated for proper treatment,” he said.

He said the affected “prospective Corps members” were found to be carriers of the deadly disease after undergoing medical screening before being admitted into the orientation camp.

Asked how many of the prospective Corps members were infected, the Coordinator said he could not give the exact number of those affected.

Deputy director in charge of Press, NYSC Headquarters, Mr. Emeka Mgbemene who did not deny the incident however insisted that those tested positive to COVID-19 were prospective and not yet a full pledge NYSC corps members.

Mr. Mgbemene revealed that ” there is no person in the NYSC orientation camp nationwide who has tested positive to COVID-19″.

” The procedure in the NYSC orientation is, everyone including the NYSC staff is subjected to a coronavirus test conducted by NCDC. Meaning that prospective Corps members and staff can only be admitted into the camp unless the person is tested negative”.
