The Karaye Emirate Council in Kano state, has embarked on an intensive enlightenment campaign against rampant usage of water soluble flavoured drinks popularly known as “killer drinks” as parts of effort to safeguard people’s lives.
This is contained in a statement by the Information Officer of the Emirate Council, Haruna Gunduwawa and issued to newsmen in Kano on Friday.

According to Gunduwawa, the Emir of Karaye, Alhaji Ibrahim Abubakar II, made the remarks while receiving a team of medical personnel from the state ministry of health under the leadership of the permanent Secretary of the ministry, Hajiya Amina Sani during an advocacy visit to the Emir in his palace.
He said the monarch, who spoke through the Makama of Karaye and District Head of Madobi, Alhaji Baba Saleh Kwankwaso, said the emirate council would take the campaign with the seriousness it deserves to ensure that people especially the rural dwellers were educated on dangers associated with taking such drinks.
Considering the fact that, we are in the holy Month of Ramadan and hot weather, the Emir coutioned people in the Emirate to desist from the consumption of flavoured drinks which experts rated as exprired or mixed with hyroxylamine element use for terrorism.

“The Emir maintained that the responsibility of safeguarding the lives of people is solely the duty of the leaders, therefore the Emirate has directed all District Heads in his domain to embark on sensitisation campaign in their respective domains,” the statement said.
He appealed to the Kano State government to impose total ban of the sales of such drinks and other chemicals that harm people’s health.
Earlier, the Permanent Secretary, Hajiya Amina Sani, said she was at the Emir’s palace on behalf of the the Commissioner of Health, Dr. Kabiru Tsanyawa to solicit the Royal father’s support in enlightening people against consumption of such illicit drinks
Sani expressed the believe that with the support of the traditional institutions, fruitful results would be attained.

She stressed the need for people to report any person with symtom of fever, hematuria, yellowish discolouration of the eyes, abdominal pain, bloody vomiting and bloody diarrhea to nearest health facility for urgent medical attention.
She also stressed the need for Islmic scholars in the Emirate to also include the enlightenment campaign in their respective Ramadan preaching and Juma’at sermons.
