Kano Headteachers Call For Adequate Security Around Primary Schools

Date:

Primary Headteachers in Kano State have called for adequate security in Primary schools across the state to check incessant theft and vandalism.

Some of the headteachers made the call on Monday while speaking with Reporters who visited their schools to assess the progress in the ongoing renovation of schools embarked upon by the state government.

Umar Aliyu, the Headteacher of Yelwa Model Primary School, Dala local government said the call was necessary in view of what is happening in some schools due to lack of adequate security.

According to him, there has been serial theft in the school where several items including chairs and tables among others were stolen in the last two months.

“As you can see the school fence is very low and this makes the school very porous by allowing criminals access to the premises.

“They (criminals) pierced the ceiling of my office, as well as the computer office where they stole the entire wiring and sockets.

“They have also stolen the school generator, the gas pot of our Samsung refrigerator and our borehole system machine worth N500,000.

“The hoodlums also stole the school computer and the school bell as well,” the headmaster explained.

He said the school which has 1,164 pupils, with 31 teachers only, is also faced with various challenges that include lack of enough seats.

In addition he said, the school lacks dispensary as well as toilet facilities which encourages open defecation in some parts of the school, thereby making it prone to cholera breakout.

At Ungogo Special Primary School, the Headteacher also complained about lack of security and teachers in the school.

“There are 2,943 pupils in the school with only 15 teachers including myself teaching them. We need more qualified teachers in the school.

“We have no functional toilet in the school, no dispensary, but we have a borehole, though it has broken down, but can still be fixed,” he said.

Meanwhile, governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, has been commended for providing 73,800 desks and chairs to schools in the state which drastically reduced the high number of pupils sitting on bare floors to receive lessons in most of the schools that benefitted.
