The chairmen of the 11 Local Government Council of Gombe state under the auspices of Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), said it would recruit 1,100 temporary staff to work in Primary Healthcare (PHC) facilities across the 11 LGAs of the state.
The state chairman of ALGON and Chairman of Gombe LGA, Barrister Sani Ahmad Haruna, disclosed this in an interview, aired by one of the local radio stations, and monitored by our correspondent.

He said the initiative aims to address the ongoing understaffing at the PHC facilities and strengthen the healthcare system across the 114 wards in the state.
“The temporary staff recruitment initiative aims to ease the burden on health workers, particularly in rural areas, and to strengthen the state’s healthcare system. Each LGA will recruit 100 volunteers, making a total of 1,100.
“These 100 temporary staff, part of which would be recruited from the current voluntary staff, will work with the PHC facilities in each LGA, to provide crucial support, especially in reducing maternal mortality and improving the delivery of primary healthcare services,” he said.

Barr. Haruna further explained that the programme would have a direct impact on healthcare facilities in rural areas, “which have been struggling to operate effectively due to staff shortages.”
According to him, the initiative also aims to reduce maternal and infant mortality rates, which he said remains a major focus for the state government.
The chairman further revealed that each of the 11 LGAs will also recruit 100 teachers as temporary staff to address the shortage of manpower in public primary schools in the state.
“We will also recruit another 1,100 people to work under the Gombe State Security, Traffic and Environmental Corps (GOSTEC), as part of measures to boost security in the state, to ensure that public lives and properties are safe,” he said.

Barr. Sani Haruna stated that the over 3,300 to be recruited under health, education, security and agricultural sectors as temporary staff, are expected to be absolve as permanent staff when the revenue drives and financial status of the LGAs improve.
The ALGON chairman added that the initiative is a collaboration between the local government councils and the state government, which was approved by Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya.
