2023: APC youth leader calls for 50% discount for youth contesting elective positions

Date:

The North West All Progressives Congress Zonal Youth Leader, Abdulhamid Umar Mohammed, has called for a special

discount of at least 50 per cent for all youth seeking to contest for elective positions under the platform of the party.

The request is contained in a letter written to the National Chairman of the Party, Abdullahi Adamu a copy of which was made available to Punch in Kano on Thursday.

According to the youth leader, the gesture would go a long way in encouraging youth participation in governance at all levels.

“It will also give the youth wing of the party a great sense of belonging in the party and will further entrench the reputation of our party as the most youth-friendly party in Nigeria,” he said.

He noted that a number of other political parties were already doing same for their
young members.

“As our great party, the All Progressives Congress is planning to commence selling of forms into various offices for the forthcoming 2023 general elections, it is expedient on us to kindly bring to the attention our Chaiman Sir, on the major
concerm of the generality of the youth wing of our great party.

“As you are aware, President Muhammadu Buhari signed the not-too-young-to-run Act in 2019 thereby reducing the age limit of eligibility into varnous political offices in the country.

“As good as the Act states, it is encouraging tor youth participation in govemance. Yet, Your Excellency our great concen as youth leaders in party scheme of things, is this debilitating factor to achieve the wisdom behind this all-embracing Act. It is no other factor than finances.

“Youth across the length and breadth of the country who fom more than 50% of the voting population, membership of our party and the general population are facing the threat of exclusion from the governance process due to non-availability of finances.

“It is for this reason that my ofice, as the Zonal Youth Leader, North West, seeks for a special discount of at least 50% for all youth seeking to contest for elective positions under the platform of our great party.

“I am in a most respectful manner requesting for such discount for the youth of our great party. Young people in this age group require social, economic and political support to realize their full potentials.

“They represent the most active, the most volatile, and yet the most vulnerable Segment of the nation’s population. They therefore need all the support available to realize their full potentials. Our party should support them in this regard, with your full support and confidence in us our great Chairman,” the letter stated.
