State Of Emergency In Education: Kano Headmasters Call For provision Of Qualified Teachers, Others

Date:

The Headmaster of Garindau Primary School, in Warawa local government area of Kano State, Mallam Murtala Aliyu has urged the state government to provide the school adequate qualified teachers as there are only 18 teachers in the school.

He made the call while speaking to our reporter who visited the school in company of some reporters on Wednesday in the area.

He said the call was necessary if state government wants to achieve better results after the declaration of state of emergency in education sector by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

“One very important thing is that we need more qualified teachers because there are only 18 teachers in this school with over 2,000 pupils. We also need a dispensary and a health worker.

“We have 2,012 pupils in all, so we need more toilets, we need a solar powered borehole to provide safe drinking water for the school.

“We are also calling on the government to renovate the old classrooms to standard, replace the lost roofs, doors and windows, as it adds one storey building of four classes and offices,” the Headmaster said.

He noted that the number of chairs and desks supplied to school are grossly inadequate considering the pupils population in the school.

“Just yesterday (Tuesday) we received 80 pieces of the three-seater chairs and desks but we need five times the number considering the number of students we are having in the school.

“Even today when we arrived in the morning, we saw that some zinc roofing sheets have been stollen, although we have a fence around the school we need it to be raised higher in addition to employing more security guards to work during the day and night,” Aliyu said.

The Headmaster said, “If those things are effectively implemented, the state emergency in education will succeed”.

According to him, the entire school is flooded annually during the rainy season, adding that the situation is affecting teaching and learning.

The reporters had also visited Chula Central Primary School in Ajingi local government area, where the Headmaster, Haruna Ibrahim, complained that they lacked enough classes for their 1,270 pupils, adding that they also don’t have enough teachers.

“It is even with the coming of the current administration that our number of teachers were increased to 12. We need more teachers to meet up with the nine years program of six years in primary and three years in Junior Secondary School.

“We also require additional classrooms here because the primary schools in the neighbouring villages come here to write their common entrance examinations.

“They come from villages like Tudun Karago, Guzawa and Yan Kinta, and all of them are sent here for the Junior Secondary School.

“We need a fence round the school, a staffroom, a dispensary, more toilets, furniture and a library” he said.

The headmasters called on the state government to ensure the total overhaul of the education sector under the current state of emergency in education in the state.
