Kano Court sentences four to death by hanging for killing mechanic

Date:

A Kano State High Court on Wednesday sentenced four persons to death by hanging for the brutal killing of a mechanic, one Rilwanu Ilyasu, popularly known as Nanu at Farawa Layout in Kano Metropolis.

They were charged with criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide, in violation of Sections 97 and 221(b) of the Penal Code.

The convicts, Abubakar Sadiq (alias Alhaji Sallari), Abdulmajid Jibrin, Nasiru Sani, and Yusuf Sani, were found guilty of executing the brutal murder of Ilyasu.

Two other suspects, identified as Nura Farin Boss and Dan Bayo, remain at large.

According to the prosecution, led by Barrister Safiya Yalwati, on the night of April 13, 2016, the defendants stormed the residence of the deceased, armed with an axe and other lethal weapons.

The attack was reportedly motivated by suspicions that Ilyasu had tipped off operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, leading to the arrest of the first defendant and the seizure of illicit drugs and N27,000.

The assault left Ilyasu with fatal injuries, marking a tragic end to a dispute rooted in alleged betrayal and criminal dealings.

The prosecution presented eight witnesses and tendered critical exhibits, including the murder weapon.

After a thorough review of the evidence, the court found the four accused guilty and imposed the ultimate penalty— death by hanging.

However, in his reaction after the judgment, through his Special Assistant (Media), Abubakar Tijjani Ibrahim, the Kano State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Abdulkarim Maude Kabir SAN, said the judgment reflects the unwavering commitment of the Kano State Ministry of Justice to ensuring that justice is served in accordance with the law.
