The Kano State Fire Service has confirmed the death of four persons after drowning in a blocked waterway at Zangon Kaya village in Dawakin Tofa local government area of Kano State.
The Public Relations Officer of the Agency, Saminu Yusuf, confirmed the incident in a statement on Saturday.
He listed the victims as Nasirudden Tasi’u, 25, Bashir Sani, 28; Yakubu Muhd, 22; and Usman Ubale, 26.
According to Yusuf, the Service received an emergency call at about 1:48 pm from one Rabiu Yusuf, who informed its Control Room about the incident.
The spokesperson said the four victims fell into a blocked waterway that had accumulated water due to the railway line construction in the area, noting that two of the deceased entered the water with the intention of swimming but got trapped.
He said the other two victims also got trapped while making attempts to rescue the others.
“Before the arrival of the fire service, the people around the area managed to pull out two victims and our rescue team pulled out the remains of two people from inside,” he said.
Yusuf said all the victims who were rescued unconscious and were later confirmed dead.
“They were also handed over to a Police Officer, SP Abdulkadir M. Albasu of Dawanau Police Division,” the statement noted.
