Some workers of Bico Nigeria Ltd, the construction company executing the Multi-million Naira Kano Cancer Center on Thursday protested over non-payment of their four months salaries by the company.
The workers, who consisted of security guards and cleaners among others, barricaded the main entrance to the site and prevented People from going in and out of the premises.
The Kano Cancer Center is being constructed inside the Muhammadu Buhari Specialists, hospital, Giginyu area in Kano metropolis.
The aggrieved workers, who vowed to disrupt the ongoing construction work at the cancer center, accused the management of the company of being insensitive to the welfare of their workers.
“We wonder why a company that is executing this gigantic project cannot pay its workers whose number is very negligible,” one of the workers told reporters who went to cover the protest.
The protesting workers alleged that the management of the company had not been regular in the payment of salary to its workers.
Speaking to newsmen shortly after the protest, an official of the company who spoke on condition of anonymity, attributed the delay in the payment of the workers’ salaries to delay in the release of funds.
“You know this is a contract and sometimes there is delay in the release of funds to the contractor, so, this is one of the reasons behind the delay in the payment of the workers salary.
He, however said that only the security guards, cleaners, store keeper and office Secretary are being paid monthly while the remaining workers are paid based on the amount of work they do daily.
He said the management had met with the workers’ sectional heads where an agreement was reached to pay them the three months salaries between today and next tomorrow.
“So, based on the meeting held with the sectional heads of the workers, we have agreed to pay them between today and tomorrow.,” he said.
