Police, judiciary to introduce special court for banditry, kidnapping cases–IGP

Date:

The Inspector General of Police, Usman Alkali-Baba says the Nigeria Police in collaboration with judiciary will introduce special courts to speedy trials for armed banditry and kidnapping.

The IGP disclosed this when he paid a working visit to Governor Aminu Bello Masari at the Government House in Katsina.

Alkali blamed the lingering armed banditry, kidnapping and other related crimes in the country on laxity by the judiciary in punishing criminals, mostly due to legal bureaucracies that slow down the wheels of justice in punishing such criminals.

The IGP regretted that the attitude of some courts has made it difficult for police prosecutors to secure convictions against criminals, and where convictions are secured, the convicts are mostly given an option of fine for crimes that should attract capital penalties.

He noted that it is the duty of the courts to hand down appropriate punishments for every crime to serve as deterrent to others, as leniency on criminals could embolden them.

The IGP announced that President Buhari has issued a directive to the force to recruit 20,000 police personnel for the years 2020 and 2021 to boost the coverage and capacity of the police force which is the lead-agency in internal security.

In his remarks, Katsina State Governor, Alhaji Aminu Bello Masari said the state government has concluded arrangements to introduce a three-tier security system which will provide a role for village and district heads to strengthen security mechanisms at community level.

The governor said the state government has also recruited and trained vigilante in all the security flashpoints in the state to assist security agencies to fight crime in their communities.

He urged the police to deploy modern technology which is part of global best practice in surveillance and tracking down of criminals.
