Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje on Tusday ordered the closure of all tertiary schools in Kano state.

This was revealed in a short statement by the states’ Commissioner for Higher Education, Dr Mariya Mahmoud Bunkure.

“His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Kano State, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, OFR, has approved the closure of all Tertiary Institutions in the State with immediate effect.

“With this approval, all students are advised to vacate the Campuses from tomorrow 16/12/2020. They’re also advised to continue revising their lessons while at home,” the statement said without giving reasons for the closure.

Daily Telescope understands that the decision to shut down the schools for a second time in over eight months may be linked to both security fears and potential outbreak of COVID-19.

The closure of the Kano schools came barely a week after over 600 students were abducted at Kankara Government Senior Secondary School (GSSS Kankara) in Katsina state by armed gunmen from their dormitories.

The students are yet to be rescued even though the state governor, Aminu Masari told President Muhammadu Buhari, who was in the state when the attack happened that the abductors had made contact.

Mr Masari had ordered the closure of all schools in the state a day after the attack.

Few days later, other states such as Jigawa, Kaduna, Zamfara and Kano also shut down their schools.
