Fake news: US Embassy to make presentation at NLA National Conference

The Nigerian Library Association (NLA) is tohold its 58th and 59th National Conference and Annual General Meeting

in Kano with plan for virtual participation from across the world due to COVID 19 pandemic.

The President of the association, Prof. Innocent Ekoja disclosed this while addressing a news conference on Saturday ahead of the conference scheduled hold between May 24 and May 28.

According to him, no fewer than 500 participants from across the country would participate the conference physically.

He said between 500 and 1,000 participants are also expected to participate virtually at the 58th and 59th National Conference of the association due to COVID-19 pandemic.

“We were supposed to hold the 58th conference last year but had to be postponed due to the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic,” he said.

He said the decision to hold the conference in Kano was aimed giving the participants the opportunity to appreciate the diversity of the country.

Ekoja disclosed that the US Embassy would make presentation on how to detect and eliminate fake news at the conference which has its theme Libraries: Inspiring, Engaging, Enabling and Connecting Stakeholders of Sustainable Development.

He explained that they will use the opportunity to inspire Nigerians on the activities of library scientists.

“We want to use the opportunity to tell Nigerians about the role we play in inspiring users of our services, engaging and inspiring them to use our services which they need.

“We will also sensitize the Nigerian public about our role in providing information to support the Sustainable Development Goals” he said.

He said during the conference, the association will confer its most prestigious award on Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje for the role he had played in the development of library in the state.

The other recipient of the award is the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, Prof. Sony Echonor.

Also speaking, the Vice President of the association, Dr. Uzu Nwafor-Orizu lamented that librarians in the country are being underused by the government and public.

“Library scientists are underused by the government and public in terms of having effective dissemination of information. The conference will broaden the understanding of how we can effectively be utilised,” Nwafor-Orizu said.
